Keto Flu?... Read This...

Ok, so you've read all the other bits and pieces about keto. You have your shopping list ready and you've cleaned out your kitchen of any temptations. Now here are a couple things that you might experience while your body is adjusting to keto.

Keto Flu...

Keto flu can occur during your initial transition from a high carb to the low carb lifestyle. It is simply your body switching from glucose to ketones as a fuel source. Some of the symptoms include:

Feeling drowsy, dizzy, irritable, sugar cravings, brain fog, poor concentration and stomach discomfort.

Generally it is short lived and once your body generates more ketones your body will kick back into gear. This can be as quick as 24 hours and last up to 3-5 weeks.

How do you get through it? Well there are a number of things you can do to help combat these symptoms..

Have good fats - olive oil, coconut oil, ghee. Oily fish like salmon and tuna.

Ensure you are eating a balanced keto diet. Eat when you are hungry, stop when you are full.

Include salt! Salt is an important aspect to your keto diet.

Electrolytes - lower carbs in your diet may affect your electrolyte balance. Ensure you are getting adequate levels of sodium, potassium and magnesium

Water, water, water.. Keep hydrated!

Sleep! Make sure you are well rested.

It's short lived!

Although these symptoms don't sound pleasant, they are short lived. The benefits from keto far outweigh a short term adjustment.

Your body will balance itself out and work like a well-oiled machine. Please remember to be kind to yourself while changing your habits. Chances are you are working to undo long-held habits and transition takes time.
